Vertical Radiators: Warm Rooms and Creative Space

Vertical Radiators: Warm Rooms and Creative Space

Posted by Radiators 4u on 14th Nov 2022

Vertical Radiators

Vertical radiators became very popular at the same time as large sliding and bi-fold doors. These new styles of door took up much of the wall space on large kitchen extensions, where this new large space required additional heat output to warm a room that suddenly had less usable wall space across one flank. More traditional radiators are horizontal and would be placed on the externally facing wall, under a window. These new glass walls take much of this space away. Vertical radiators are the ideal solution, as they make full use of the room's height, giving maximum heat output within the smallest footprint. The popularity of anthracite radiators also grew at this time, as architects would often specify bi-fold doors in RAL 7016 anthracite grey. Our best-selling vertical radiators for kitchens in the UK are currently grey/anthracite vertical radiators.

By capitalising on the height of a room, a vertical radiator has a smaller footprint than a horizontal radiator. This reduced footprint frees up wall space and creates opportunities to be installed in more places. As a result, vertical radiators are ideally suited for narrow hallways, vestibules, lobbies, alcoves, and any other awkwardly shaped rooms.

What Are The Benefits of a Vertical Radiator?

This is not a tall story. There is absolutely no downside to installing a vertical radiator.

A vertical radiator produces the same heat output (BTU) as a horizontal radiator of comparable size. Check out our handy BTU calculator to estimate the BTU output required to heat your room. This calculation will be based on factors such as room size, room exposure, and type of windows.

Vertical radiators work particularly well in buildings with high-quality double glazing. Traditionally, radiators have been positioned under windows (the coldest part of a room). This helped homeowners to heat any drafts coming in from poorly fitted windows. However, modern double glazing has effectively eliminated these cold spots. As a result, radiators don't have to be strategically placed in homes with modern windows.

But there are many other benefits of vertical radiators.

A Design Classic

Vertical radiators come in a wide range of styles and finishes. Like traditional horizontal designs, they are also available in gas centrally heated and electric models.

From traditional column radiators to more contemporary designer looks, you won't want to hide these great-looking radiators behind any furniture. In fact, our vertical radiators look so stylish, they can be displayed as a statement piece in their own right.

By being fully exposed allows for better circulation of warm air in a room. Consequently, vertical radiators may prove more efficient by not being blocked by heat-absorbing soft furnishings, bulky furniture, and old-fashioned-looking covers.

Interior designers looking to highlight a feature wall or display a large piece of art with an uncluttered view will find vertical radiators particularly attractive. Vertical radiators are also an increasingly popular choice for rooms with bifold doors and large French windows. They can also be fitted in conservatories where wall space is limited.

With many complementary designs in stock, vertical radiators can be mixed and matched with horizontal models to suit each room's needs.

Great for Kitchens, Bathrooms, and Ensuites

In kitchens and bathrooms, where space is of a premium, vertical radiators are perfect for squeezing into tight spots. Their narrow profile enables them to be installed easily alongside fitted kitchen units. You can also install them around large appliances like cookers, dishwashers, washing machines, and bathroom suites. In the bathroom, vertical radiators can also be incorporated as heated towel rails. In small ensuite bathrooms, they may be the only suitable option to heat these rooms.

Add Value to Your Home

A vertical radiator can turn a previously unloved corner of your home into a warm space when incorporated into small rooms and awkward spaces.

Think about how a vertical radiator can help you better utilise and enjoy your home's living space. It may even add value to your property. For example, could you turn a box room into a cosy guest room, a comfortable home office or a hobby or games room?

Easy to Install

For an experienced plumber, vertical radiators are as quick and easy to install as traditional horizontal models. They are also easier to move. This will help you if you plan to make regular renovations to your property. However, vertical radiators will put more weight on a small area of your walls. Therefore, fitters should check the quality of the load-bearing walls before installation.

Radiators 4u stocks a wide range of vertical and horizontal radiators and accessories. These include wall stays, radiator feet, valve kits and system additives to protect and extend the life of your radiators.
