What is the difference between 2 and 3 column radiators?

What is the difference between 2 and 3 column radiators?

Posted by Radiators4u on 29th Nov 2022

A traditional column radiator is a beautiful thing. Manufactured using mild steel or cast iron tubing, and in the case of Radiators 4u’s cast iron radiators, using techniques that have barely changed in 200 years, these stylish radiators look as good today as they did in the Georgian and Victorian eras.

As a design classic and the perfect example of style and function, a column radiator should be celebrated as something that adds real character and warmth to a room. Available in a wide range of styles and finishes, you won't want to hide these radiators behind the furniture.

What are the benefits of column radiators?

Column Radiator

Column radiators don't just look great. They are incredibly efficient.

By incorporating multiple columns in its design, a column radiator maximises its surface area to emit more heat. This efficiency means a column radiator can often heat a bigger space than radiators of a similar size. The increased surface size also means column radiators can be run at a lower temperature than conventional panel radiators and still heat the room comfortably.

Should I buy a 2 or 3-column radiator?

As a general rule of thumb, the more columns, the greater the radiator's surface area. Therefore, a 3-column radiator will have a higher heat output than a 2-column radiator of a similar height and length.

When deciding whether to buy a 2 or 3-column radiator, you'll need to consider the radiator's heat output alongside factors like room size, location and use, and personal preferences regarding design and finish. Remember, a 3-column radiator will typically be wider than a 2-column radiator. You'll need to factor this in when looking at available wall space.

How to buy the right size column radiator for your room

BTU Calculator

In terms of heat output, column radiators are rated using the British Thermal Unit (BTU) system. The recommended BTU required to heat a room can be quickly calculated using the Radiators 4u BTU calculator. The calculator will then recommend suitable radiators to meet your requirements. Depending on the size of your room, you may wish to distribute your calculated BTU across multiple radiators.

Larger rooms may require radiators to be placed at opposite ends, to ensure even heat distribution throughout the room. Rooms with limited wall space can use vertical column radiators to maximise heat output where required

Cast Iron, Steel or Aluminium radiators?

Cast iron radiators

Room size, usage and property type may also influence your choice of radiators. For example, aluminium and  steel column radiators heat up and cool down faster than cast iron radiators. This makes steel and aluminium radiators perfect for rooms you may wish to heat quickly.

Conversely, cast iron radiators will take slightly longer to reach temperature but retain heat for longer; due to the thickness and mass of the material. Cast iron radiators are particularly good at heating rooms with high ceilings, making them perfect for Georgian-style houses.

Other factors to consider include price and weight. Steel and aluminium radiators will be cheaper than their cast iron equivalent and, being lighter in weight, easier to install. With that said, we believe nothing looks or feels better than a traditional cast iron radiator.
